Portland Stand-Up Comedian Andrew Berkowitz
Stand-up comedian. Actor. Improviser. Writer. Teacher. Nerd. Andrew has had a lot of odd jobs in his day. Luckily, that makes for a lot of comedy gold.
Meet Andrew
Andrew Berkowitz was born in New York City and grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, where he attended Steller Alternative Secondary School and was encouraged to flex his creative muscles on a regular basis.
At Stanford University, Andrew collaborated with Ram’s Head Theatrical Society on Big Game Gaieties and wrote a popular weekly humor column for The Stanford Daily called “Tips on Adulthood.” After graduation he worked as a reporter at the Palo Alto Weekly, a writer and editor at the Anchorage Daily News and as a freelance contributor to newspapers and national magazines.
As a playwright, Andrew has written and directed for Out North Theater Company, Thinking People’s Theater and Coho Productions. His plays, including Pounding Vipers, Frozen Carrots and Whippoorwill, have been produced in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, California and Massachusetts.
During a 15-year career in advertising, Andrew won numerous awards for writing and directing humorous radio commercials, working with clients nationwide. He also created and directed advertising for television and print. He later helped to found TeamSnap, a web service for managing recreational sports teams and groups.
In 2000, Andrew joined ComedySportz Portland, and was named Artistic Director of the improvisational theater company in 2008. He currently performs, directs and teaches with ComedySportz and several other improv and sketch groups, including The Bee Word, Rap City, MST2K10, Match Game and Peachy Chicken. Past groups have included Green with Andy, Fit to Print, Berkowitz and Moffitt.
As a stand-up comic, Andrew has performed at the Portland Comedy Invitational, The Boiler Room, Applebees®, Ignite Portland, Slocum House and numerous private corporate shows and fundraisers. He also does keynote addresses on business topics for private corporate events.
In his spare time, Andrew enjoys playing hockey, running and cycling, cooking, reading, crossword puzzles and learning new stuff.
